Orton-Gillingham Practicum

Practicum for Individuals Seeking OG Certification

In addition to these courses, a year-long practicum, overseen by a Fellow, is required for the completion of requirements for each level of certification (Classroom Educator and Associate), and allows a teacher to deepen their practice through a rigorous coaching and mentoring model. After completing their observations and practicum requirements, an individual is able to apply to the Academy for certification.

Practicums such as those offered by the Fellows at Shoreline Reading, are preparation programs. Through their practicum trainees are observed five times during the year and receive coaching and feedback after each observation. They learn to apply the concepts they have covered in their courses; how to create sound lesson plans; learn how to prepare a portfolio for application to the Academy; and complete in-depth readings on various subjects pertaining to dyslexia.  Throughout the process trainees receive feedback on their teaching, lesson plans and portfolio preparation.

Please note, when the practicum is complete trainees do not apply to their training program. Instead, as with teacher certification at the state level, trainees apply directly to the Certifying Committee at the Academy, which is endorsed by the New York Board of Regents. If a trainee’s application and portfolio pass the certifying committee, the trainee is granted OG certification at the level for which they applied.  Certification is required for an individual to represent themselves as Orton-Gillingham trained.
